The film is set in New York City and revolves around Naina Catherine Kapur (Preity Zinta), a serious, pessimistic MBA student whose family life is strained: her father committed suicide years ago, her mother (Jaya Bachchan) struggles to run a restaurant, and her grandmother constantly criticizes her mother.
Knowing he cannot be with Naina, Aman decides to sacrifice his love. He pretends to be a flirt and a womanizer, and actively pushes Naina toward Rohit.
